Explore the history of TriDeltathon, its original swimming, cycling, and running events, and its connection to the TriDeltaRUN 5K.
TriDeltathon is a historic Knoxville, Tennessee, sporting event associated with the University of Tennessee and the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Traditionally organized as a pool-based triathlon, the event combined swimming, cycling, and running while supporting a charitable cause. Over time, a related running event called TriDeltaRUN has also appeared on local race calendars.
If you are searching for TriDeltathon, it is important to distinguish the original triathlon from the newer 5K event. Historical race listings provide details about the original course, while more recent organizer announcements describe TriDeltaRUN in Knoxville. The information below explains the event’s background, race format, charitable purpose, and how to find reliable updates.
What Is TriDeltathon?
TriDeltathon is the name of a long-running sporting event historically held in Knoxville, Tennessee, near the University of Tennessee campus. It was organized with support from members of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and Race Day Events.
The original event followed a traditional triathlon format, combining three athletic disciplines in sequence:
- Swimming: Participants completed a swim in an indoor pool.
- Cycling: Athletes followed a designated cycling course around the university area.
- Running: The final stage involved running along a campus route.
The event was designed to bring together students, local athletes, volunteers, and community supporters. Its charitable purpose was also an important part of its identity, with proceeds benefiting East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.
Historical listings described TriDeltathon as the oldest continuously running pool triathlon in the country. This is a claim made in the event’s own promotional material, rather than an independently verified national ranking.
TriDeltathon History and Its Connection to TriDeltaRUN
TriDeltathon appeared on Knoxville race calendars for decades. A 2019 listing described its 35th edition, while the 2020 listing advertised the 36th edition. These records demonstrate the event’s long history in the local athletic community.
The 2020 race was scheduled for April 19 at the University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center. However, the organizer’s registration page states that the event was canceled following the university’s decision to move to an online model for the remainder of that academic year.
The cancellation notice also explained options for registered participants, including refunds and transferring entries. It identified East Tennessee Children’s Hospital as the selected charity.
In later years, a related event called TriDeltaRUN appeared on Race Day Events’ calendar. Rather than the original swim-bike-run format, TriDeltaRUN is a 5K running event that continues the charitable tradition.
The distinction matters because the two names refer to different race formats. Someone researching the original TriDeltathon may encounter information about swimming and cycling, while a person looking for TriDeltaRUN will find information about a running-only event.
Historic TriDeltathon Race Format and Distances
The historical TriDeltathon followed a sprint-style, pool-based triathlon format. Its published course details provide a useful picture of what participants experienced during earlier editions.
| Race stage | Historical distance | Description |
| Swimming | 400 meters | Indoor pool swim |
| Cycling | 6 miles | Route around the University of Tennessee campus and Neyland Drive |
| Running | 3 miles | Campus route passing Neyland Stadium and Thompson-Boling Arena |
These distances come from the 2019 and 2020 event descriptions. They should be treated as historical details, not as the confirmed format of a future race.
How the Swimming Stage Worked
The historical race used a structured indoor pool format. Swimmers entered the water individually at short intervals and completed successive 50-meter lengths by moving between lanes.
Participants were seeded according to their estimated 400-meter swim times. This arrangement helped organize the swimming portion and allowed athletes to begin at different times rather than all entering the pool together.
Cycling and Running Stages
After swimming, participants completed a six-mile cycling route around the university area and Neyland Drive. The final three-mile run passed notable campus landmarks, including Neyland Stadium and Thompson-Boling Arena.
The combination of a pool swim, relatively short bike ride, and campus run made the historical event a local sprint-style challenge. However, course layouts, road arrangements, and event rules can change, so these details should not be used as instructions for a future event without confirmation from the organizer.
Where Was TriDeltathon Held?
The historic TriDeltathon was held at the University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center in Knoxville.
Historical venue details:
- Location: University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center
- Street address: 2106 Andy Holt Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37996
- Race area: The University of Tennessee campus and surrounding roads
The related TriDeltaRUN has used a different venue. The organizer’s published 2026 listing identifies UT Gardens at 2518 Jacob Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37996, as its venue. The course was described as running largely along the Third Creek Greenway.
Because the locations differ, visitors should check the exact event name and edition before planning transportation or arrival times.
TriDeltathon Registration and Participation
Registration details depend on which edition or related event a person wants to enter.
The historical TriDeltathon offered individual and relay categories. Its registration page also advertised student pricing and age-group awards. These features helped make the event accessible to different types of participants, including students and athletes who preferred to compete as a team.
TriDeltaRUN, meanwhile, is a 5K running event. Its published 2026 listing advertised student discounts, race shirts, overall and age-group awards, refreshments, and race-day registration.
These are details from past event listings. They do not confirm that the same options, prices, or arrangements will be available at a future event.
How to Find Current Registration Information
Before registering, follow these steps:
- Visit the Race Day Events website to check its current event calendar.
- Open the relevant event page and verify its name, date, venue, distance, and registration status.
- Review the registration platform linked by the organizer.
- Contact the organizer if the information is incomplete or if you need clarification about eligibility, student discounts, or participation rules.
As of October 18, 2026, the reviewed sources document the April 19, 2026, TriDeltaRUN event, but they do not establish a confirmed date for a future TriDeltathon or TriDeltaRUN edition. Check the organizer’s announcements rather than relying on an estimated date or an archived registration page.
Charity and Community Impact
Charitable fundraising has been a central part of TriDeltathon’s history. The original race listings identify East Tennessee Children’s Hospital as the beneficiary, and the related TriDeltaRUN event has continued that charitable connection.
The 2025 and 2026 TriDeltaRUN descriptions associate the proceeds with East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and Camp Eagle’s Nest. The camp serves children with cancer and rare blood disorders.
This charitable focus gives the event a purpose beyond athletic competition. Participants can challenge themselves physically while supporting a cause connected to children’s healthcare and family support.
Students, volunteers, spectators, and community members may also contribute to the event’s atmosphere. Volunteers have historically included members of Delta Delta Delta, helping support race operations and participant experience.
Anyone wishing to make a donation should confirm the current beneficiary and use a donation link provided or approved by the organizer. A historical donation page does not necessarily reflect the arrangements for a future edition.
How to Find TriDeltathon Updates, Results, and Donations
Because older event listings remain accessible online, it is important to check the publication date before using their information.
The following resources serve different purposes:
